Pedro de Jesús has twice won the Premio Carpentier, Cuba’s major literary award, once for this collection and once for his critical study of the late Cuban writer Severo Sarduy. He has received the La Gaceta de Cuba annual prize for short story and the Raúl Ferrer prize for poetry. His other fiction includes the novel Síbilas en Mercaderes, published in Cuba and Mexico, and the story collection Frigid Tales (Cuentos frígidos) published in Cuba, Spain, and the United States.

De Jesús was born and lives in the town of Fomento in central Cuba. He studied at the University of Havana and the Central University of Las Villas. He has represented Cuba in the international book fairs of Frankfurt (1998), Guadalajara (2006), and Mazatlán (2009) and has presented papers at international conferences including “Cuba: Culture and Society” at the University of Iowa (2001) and “International Colloquium Feminine/Masculine” at Casa de Las Américas (2007).
