Manuel studied Hispanic literature at Yale, specializing in Luis Cernuda, then returned to Mexico where he became a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Octavio Paz and later president of PEN\u2019s Mexico chapter. His books include two stunning long poems, <i>Origami para un d\u00eda de lluvia (Origami for a Rainy Day)<\/i> (1990) and <i>El plato azul <\/i>(1999).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Manuel&#8217;s long-time friend and confidant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderink.org\/site\/books\/indran-amirthanayagam\">Indran Amirthanayagam<\/a>, has now edited and translated the first large-scale selection of Manuel&#8217;s work in English, releasing in January, 2023, from Di\u00e1logos, available now for preorder. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderink.org\/site\/shop\/origami\"><em>Origami: Selected Poems of Manuel Ulacia<\/em><\/a> includes an extensive collection of Ulacia&#8217;s work (including the two long poems mentioned above), all selected and translated by Amirthanayagam except the remarkable long poem &#8220;River,&#8221; translated by famed translator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanport.ucsb.edu\/people\/suzanne-jill-levine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suzanne Jill Levine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manuel Ulacia (1953\u20132001) was born into a family of Spanish poets of the famous \u201cGeneration of \u201827\u201d who fled to Mexico from the Spanish Civil War.
