\"Olja\"<\/a>Those of you who have read the novel\u00a0Adios, Cowboy<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Olja Savi\u010devi\u0107<\/a>, released in the US by McSweeney’s in 2016, will find our excitement over\u00a0Mamasafari<\/em><\/a>, releasing from Di\u00e1logos in September, understandable. When Cowboy<\/em> released in the UK in 2015, The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0and The Irish Times<\/em>\u00a0hailed the author as an important new European voice. And even the American reviews have praised with the usual plot summaries, ignoring\u00a0Olja’s ear for dialogue and eye for image and sensory detail, qualities which are brought to the fore in Mamasafari<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Andrea\"<\/a>Today we are featuring the title poem from this book, read by translator Andrea Jurjevi\u0107<\/a>, and we are featuring the book on the website<\/a>, with a one-day half-price deal, half off even the low pre-order price. Some people live and die worse than their cows.<\/p>\n

When the people were taken away, cows lowed in the fields until they died.<\/p>\n

When I talk about this to colleagues, they turn to one another, as if I\u2019m crazy.<\/p>\n

How do you talk about that at conferences? That\u2019s much too practical for conferences.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s too practical even for poetry.<\/p>\n

I remember the meadow where I cry because I\u2019m scared of a little dog, of the woods in which I get lost, and the dog finds me.<\/p>\n

In the photographs they used to bring to us, shaggy new grass and wild onions had grown from the ashes.<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s a stranger today, and she\u2019s going on a fieldtrip, on a safari to her own country.<\/p>\n

Are there flowers, where the two of us are going with a Gianni rental, growing from the uncle\u2019s green vertebra. Or does someone\u2019s tomato stake jut from Grandma\u2019s toothless mouth.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll get a rental in a nearby town.<\/p>\n

When finally we go to our mountain.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been planning this safari for twenty years, every spring.<\/p>\n
