Discovery of the New World<\/em> collects, for the first time in English, Algerian francophone writer Nabile Far\u00e8s’ ambitious trilogy of novellas reflecting on the effects of French colonialism in North Africa. The trilogy includes\u00a0The Olive Grove <\/i>(Le Champ des oliviers<\/i>, Editions du Seuil, 1972); Memory of the Missing<\/em> (M\u00e9moire de l\u2019Absent<\/i>, 1974); and Exile and Helplessness<\/em> (L\u2019Exil et le d\u00e9sarroi<\/i>, 1976). These heavily experimental works, set in the time just before and after the Algerian war with France,\u00a0probe issues of identity\u2014race, gender, nationality\u2014in the wake of European colonialism.\u00a0Just as Algeria itself has found only the most difficult paths after independence (paths glimpsed, in all their neocolonial cynicism, in\u00a0Exile and Helplessness<\/em>), and just as Far\u00e8s himself renounced a future in Algeria and many of his books could not, until just now, be published there, the protagonist of this work is left with loss of purpose, shadows of loved ones, and a village that will never be the same.<\/p>\n

“The first thing that hits me every time I open or reopen one of Nabile Far\u00e8s\u2019 books,” writes Pierre Joris in the Preface, “is the immediacy of the intense struggle\u2014simultaneously, the glorious success\u2014of a text that stays at white heat by bending\/bedding itself between what some would call the \u201cgenres\u201d of poetry & prose.” And surely one of Far\u00e8s most distinctive talents is his ability to convey the sense of political struggle by means of structural tensions within the language itself.
