His poems have been translated into several languages, among them French, German and Italian, but thus far his appearances in English have been rare.<\/p>\n<p>As a self-described \u201cpop poet,\u201d he writes accessible, elegant and witty poems, by turns upbeat and forlorn, that look at reality from refreshingly quirky angles. Drawing on <span class=\"s1\">comic books, cartoons, Hollywood movies, slang, urban culture, <\/span>his poems <span class=\"s1\">address happy and unhappy loves, fantasies and nightmares, the lineaments of big-city life. Some of them, like \u201cBreakfast\u201d and \u201cUnhappily Married,\u201d have transcended literary circles to become part of the general culture. Translated by the Cuban-American writer Gustavo P\u00e9rez Firmat, <i>My Favorite Monster<\/i> which gathers poems that span the whole of his career, is the first full-length collection of Cuenca\u2019s poetry in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I loved this wonderful collection of Luis Alberto de Cuenca\u2019s poetry. Deftly translated by poet-essayist Gustavo P\u00e9rez Firmat, these poems are a feast of wit and melancholy, illuminated with \u201cthe light of the real\u201d but at once fantastic and funny.
