{"id":192,"date":"2017-10-04T23:43:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T04:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lavenderink.org\/site\/?post_type=product&#038;p=192"},"modified":"2020-05-26T14:42:58","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T19:42:58","slug":"nothingness-in-the-rough","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.lavenderink.org\/site\/shop\/nothingness-in-the-rough\/","title":{"rendered":"Nothingness in the Rough"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>(La Nada en Bruto)<\/em><\/h2>\n<h3>Gabriel Maga\u00f1a Merlo<br \/>\n translated by Suzanne Jill Levine<\/h3>\n<p>ISBN 978-1935084235<br \/>\n 120 pages: $15.00<br \/>\n November, 2012<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Di\u00e1logos is proud to present the first full-length book to be published in English by the great Mexican poet Gabriel Maga\u00f1a Merlo, translated by the winner of the 2012 PEN Center USA Literary Award for Translation, Suzanne Jill Levine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here is what poet Frank Ducros, who has translated\u00a0<em><strong>La Nada en Bruto<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>into French, has to say about Gabriel Maga\u00f1a Merlo:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\">Within the canon of forms we have inherited from antiquity, poetry has always been presented as either narrative (Homer), discourse (the philosophical poem) or sometimes, lyrical song (Alcman or Sappho).\u00a0 This continues to be the case in even the most modern avatar of tradition, that is, the novel, despite the sophistication of its most audacious authors (such as Proust, Joyce, Faulkner).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\">Only a few poets, following Mallarm\u00e9\u2019s brilliant intuition that \u201cpoetry has completely changed its course after the great Homeric detour\u201d which implied that narrative and discourse conceal rather than reveal the very essence of poetry, have ventured on a different path\u2014upon which the word, necessarily embodied in language, cuts across that language limiting what it can say. It cannot be limited or reduced, furthermore, because it seeks by means of language itself the connections between the word, at its moment of birth, and the web of real things upon which it is called to reveal\u2014not in the wake of things that have already appeared, but in their first, immediate and most secret possibilities of articulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\">Among those poets who have ventured on this path is Gabriel Maga\u00f1a Merlo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\">The result is a word that is not just bare or stripped down. Its rarity comes from its articulation by means of a syntax that is not and cannot be grammatical; the word precedes the very thing to which it is bound, and can only be a rhythm tracing a web of relations which would otherwise remain hidden, without the poem that produces the revelation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 60px;\">In other words: none of the conventional forms suits the word. The difficulty implied in reading this poetry has nothing to do with an intended obscurity, but has everything to do with the need to let go of our age-old habits of reading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lavenderink.org\/magana\/magana.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"95\" border=\"0\" \/>Gabriel Maga\u00f1a Merlo was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1944. He has published five books of poetry in Mexico and numerous poems in various magazines.\u00a0<strong><em>Lejos alcanzado aqu\u00ed<\/em><\/strong>, a selection of poems from all of his books, was published by Fondo de Cultura Econ\u00f3mica in 2012.\u00a0<strong><em>La Nada en Bruto<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is translated here as\u00a0<em>Nothingness in the Rough\u00a0<\/em>by Suzanne Jill Levine. It has also been translated into French by the poet Franc Ducros and published in France as<em>\u00a0<strong>Le rien rugueux<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Th\u00e9\u00e9t\u00e8te editions).\u00a0 His book\u00a0<strong><em>Intolerante superficie<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0has been translated into Italian by the poet Nanni Cagnone and will be published in Italy as\u00a0<strong><em>Superficie insofferente<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Edizioni Galleria Mazzoli. Translations of his poems have been published in\u00a0<strong><em>Words Without Borders<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and the magazine\u00a0<strong><em>OR<\/em><\/strong>, and will soon appear in\u00a0<strong><em>Mandorla<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><em>Common Knowledge<\/em><\/strong>.
