Mihail G\u0103l\u0103\u021banu is one of Romania\u2019s most exciting contemporary poets. His verbal brilliance has been described as prodigious, explosive, exuberant, risky: the \u201cVesuvius\u201d of post-communist poets, one critic enthused. Another praised his natural stylistic gifts by echoing a term that the great Nichita St\u0103nescu used about himself, calling G\u0103l\u0103\u021banu \u201ca polyglot in the Romanian language.\u201d The poetic persona of a Mihail G\u0103l\u0103\u021banu poem is \u201cuninhibited and gesticulating, biting and provocative, histrionic and sentimental, sexualized and mystic.\u201d His lyricism has the intensity of \u201ca plasma jet, suffusing everything, dissolving conventions\u2026\u201d\u2014but not infrequently it turns hyperbolic, bardic, and also wildly comic. In\u00a0The Starry Womb<\/em><\/strong>, the title defines the book\u2019s central metaphor: the identification of the maternal womb with the celestial vault, thus creating a startling perspective by means of which, in the apt phrase of critic Daniel Cristea-Enache, the external world \u201cis transformed into a pale extension of a fabulous primordial universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

His poetic endeavors have produced several thousand poems, impossible to be inventoried. Hundreds of them are extraordinary, though, by their visionary force and artful use of the Romanian language. Mihail G\u0103l\u0103\u021banu can be seen as a Paganini of poetry, holding under his chin not a Stradivarius but a dictionary.
