The tour wanders among topographies of current events, memory, art, and loss among others, and points to ways meaning and understanding of phenomena in the world are constructed through, and altered by, language. The vivid description, color, and imagistic detail combine to create imaginative worlds, spaces within yet on the edge of the everyday, while showing the difficulty of articulating aspects of life that we struggle to even comprehend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Praise for Jill Darling and\u00a0<em>a geography of syntax<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jill Darling\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>a geography of syntax<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0intimately maps the wayward intersections of language, emotion, and complicity, reminding us, dependent on a \u201clanguage designed to inform,\u201d \u201cWe swallow\/ and breathe\/ an intricate hazard.\u201d Polymorphous and ubiquitous, this hazard lies at the heart of Darling\u2019s\u00a0<em>geometry<\/em>. Contending against the \u201cfantasy notes of casino bliss\u201d, the poet unsettles excuse, easy ignorance, propaganda and manipulation: \u201cthe point is to add words \/ sprinkle them across divisions\u201d &#8212; \u201cthat is to say, I can rearrange you at my own discretion.\u201d Poet\u2019s work uncomfortably proximal to the politician\u2019s and marketer\u2019s. Yet counter to the facile dissimulation language affords&#8211;\u201dwe are the dismissal of our own cruelest \/ (clearest) actions\u201d&#8211;Darling simultaneously draws out language\u2019s intrinsic delight. Thus these poems cannot help but mount their own hybridity, yoking together the cognitive (syntax) and affective (flavored). Yes, this is Romantic synaethesia, but the tools of the trade&#8211;simile (\u201cthese lines\/ like flags of improvisation\/ wrapped, in a record, surroundings\/ resonating like a gift,\u201d), metaphor (\u201cphoto reproductions, collage, behind glass\/ contained by wooden parameters, who else can speak this,\/ with or without the protection of glass\u201d),\u00a0 metonym (\u201cParticulates\/ of a symphony (the one repeated\/repeatable refrain)\u201d), synecdoche (\u201cIn a space of salt and fog\/ violet: a circuit relays individual blades\u201d)\u00a0 and even pun (\u201cThe hysterical moment captures\u201d)&#8211;are expertly handled. And also, importantly, mishandled in homage to \u201ca silent glow\/\/ beyond\/\/ traffic\u00a0and weather, the seasonal reproduction of\/ synthetic stress.\u201d<br \/>\n &#8211;Tyrone Williams, author of\u00a0<strong><em>Howell<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Hero Project of the Century<\/em>,\u00a0<em>On Spec<\/em>,\u00a0<em>c.c.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A delicacy of movement takes flight in the language, the voice and body of the poet&#8230;.
